Useful Tip

Change the Default File Location in Excel 2007

Many users find that they tend to open workbooks from the same folder on their computer. If that Windows Vista folder isn't Documents (My Documents in Windows XP), you can change the folder that Microsoft Office Excel 2007 displays when you want to open or save a workbook. Here’s how:

1. Click the Office button.
2. Click Excel Options.
3. In the left column,
click Save.
4. Type the desired location in the Default file
location box.

5 Quick Tips for Marketing Your Business Online

  1. Promote your business through social networking sites such as Facebook, Linked in, Plaxo, MySpace etc..
  2. Give free advice and assistance through online discussion boards and forums - we have one of the best here in South Yorkshire - www.sheffieldforum.co.uk
  3. Get reciprocal links from other websites such as your customers, suppliers and partners.   Sites that are relevant to yours, include the same keywords, have a high volume of visitors and rank higher than you on Google are the best ones for this.  Links from irrelevant or unpopular sites may have a negative affect on your rankings.
  4. Provide updates, news or regular information through a newsletter or blog that your customers can subscribe to.
  5. Include links to your site on all electronic communications, including all of the above.

Women in Business - Leadership for the Future

Are you struggling to deal with the challenges your business is currently facing? How will you steer your organisation through economic downturn and find a path for future growth?

Sheffield Hallam University are looking for up to eight women SME business owners or managers who are willing to be challenged, stretched and moved outside their comfort zone to form a group of like-minded individuals working together on solving problems and issues in their businesses. We have created an innovative programme which aims to enable peer to peer learning and development, with a focus on strategic problem solving.

The programme will consists of four workshops run as small discussion groups, facilitated by an experienced member of staff from Sheffield Business School where discussions will focus on issues the participating individuals and their organisations face. Participants will share their ideas and experiences to find innovative solutions through their discussions.

What are the benefits?

  • you can focus on strategic action planning to solve problems you are facing in your own business by using a group-based approach
  • the group will provide an invaluable support network from women with similar responsibilities, successes and challenges that you are facing
  • you should see tangible progress in your business and personal life

What is the time commitment?
The programme is made up of four sessions delivered over approximately four months, each session being of three hours duration. Sessions will take place at Sheffield Business School, Arundel Gate in Sheffield City Centre from 18.00 - 21.00. Food and refreshments will be provided.

The first session will take place on Monday 8 June 2009. Subsequent meeting dates will be agreed amongst the participants at the first session

What does it cost?
The normal fee for the programme is £399 per participant. However, Sheffield Business School at Sheffield Hallam University is an Academy Centre of the Northern Leadership Academy and has secured funding to allow us to offer 8 free places to individuals from separate non-competing SME businesses from the 'S' postcode region.

How do I take part?
If you are willing to be challenged and stretched and want to be part of a group of like-minded women working together to solve problems and issues within your business with total honesty, respect and understanding then this programme is for you.

To apply for one of these free places please download and complete the details form (Word 38KB) and return by e-mail to Lana House at l.a.house@shu.ac.uk by Friday 29th May 2009.
